Doctor, Now What?

The day I finished my PhD, I thought I had finally figured it out.

I had the degree. I had the credential. I was in the top one percent.

Surely, the doors would open.

But they did not open the way I expected.

If you have ever felt that gap between what you thought your PhD would do for you and what actually happened, I talk about that moment in more depth here:

I spent years in corporate America believing my doctorate would lead me into leadership.

Instead, I watched people without my education move faster.

I felt the shift in the room when I asked for tuition reimbursement.

And eventually, I got laid off.

Then in 2019, everything changed.

I had a stroke.

That was my lowest moment.

And in that moment, I realized something I had never considered before:

My PhD was not the problem.

It was my foundation.

That season forced me to rebuild mentally, emotionally, and professionally.

I had to stop chasing titles and start asking a different question:

Where can I actually use what I know in a way that feels aligned?

That question changed everything. I pivoted into teaching.

And for the first time, I felt alive.

Not because of a title. Not because of a paycheck.

But because I was finally using my knowledge to help people who felt exactly like I did.

Lost. Questioning if their degree was even worth it.

Teaching gave me autonomy.

It gave me freedom.

It gave me the space to build something on my own terms.

If you want to see how I made that transition, watch here:

But here is what really shifted for me.

I realized my PhD developed more than my intellect.

It developed my emotional intelligence.

It taught me resilience.

It taught me empathy.

It taught me how to navigate complexity.

Those are things that cannot be outsourced.

They cannot be automated.

They are what make you valuable.

Now I am here to tell you this clearly:

Your PhD is not a liability.

It is your launchpad.

And if you are a Black woman with a doctorate feeling lost right now,

you are not behind. You are not stuck.

You are at the point where you decide what comes next.
